Welcome to RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, UK, home of the Vickers VC-10 and Lockheed L-1011 TriStar transports circa June, 2011.
JetFlix TV videographer Chris Mak spent three days at Brize in late June of 2011 filming the comings and goings of these fabulous classic airliners. Most of the filmed flights were local flight training sorties which included generous rounds of “circles and bumps”, which was common for these types back in the day.
All the filming was conducted from the airport perimeter road under the final approach, and the grassy hills along the short final approach path to the airfield, which provide public footpath access, which is ideal for aviation buffs keen to soak up the action.
During the last few years of RAF Vickers VC-10 and Lockheed L-1011 TriStar operations, aviation buffs came to Brize from near and far to observe the proceedings a having both rare types on strength at at the same airfield, with good spotting access was a true blessing and an opportunity not to be missed.
In 2012 the RAF VC-10 fleet was retired having been replaced by Airbus A330 Voyagers and the L-1011s were retired in quick procession, making this video a wonderful visual memory to these great aircraft.
