Flying the Fabulous IL-62 Cubano Style video film movie

Cuba is famous for more than just Old Havana, the Malecon, Old 1950s cars, hot tempers, and the rhythms of Cubano music. The country’s national airline used to operate fleet comprised of a bevy of Iron Curtain Classic jetliners, including of course the iconic IL-62 four holer.

Our intrepid videographer Chris Mak payed a visit to Cuba back in January of 2008, and filmed two amazing flights on the Cubana IL-62, between Santo Domingo and Havana, and between Havana and Bogota.

Chris was able to sit in two very different seats on his two flights, to provide us with an over wing view, as well as a view from the rear by the engines and trailing flaps section of the wing. Of course the rear filming allows us to sample and enjoy the ear splitting harmonics and crescendos of the four engines of this 1960s classic jetliner from behind the Iron Curtain.

Cubana retired their small active fleet of IL-62s back in 2011, but this video serves as a permanent visual and aural archive of what it was like to fly on these marvellous flying machines of Soviet era design.
