This newsreel movie provides a narrated highlight of the aircraft presented at the SBAC (Society of British Aircraft Builders) Farnborough Airshow of 1949. The immediate postwar years saw Britain enter perhaps its most ambitious period of aircraft development with a wide range of both civilian and military aircraft being developed for the post war world of commerce leading into the jet age of the 1950s.
Highlights of the 1949 Farnborough Airshow include the Bristol Brabazon, the Vickers Viscount prototype model 630, the Handley Page Hermes, Armstrong Whitworth Apollo, Short Sunderland flying boat, Canberra and much more.
The low level flypast of the BOAC Short Sunderland and the the Hermes flying display surely must be considered as highlights, with impressive flight demonstrations also turned in by the Comet, Viscount and Brabazon.

What an impressive array of aircraft.
For me the Hermes 5 was the highlight too: first time I’ve seen this rare bird on film; it also brings back memories of flying on its piston-engined brother, the Hermes 4, on the BOAC West Africa route. My first cockpit visit ever, at the age of 6, was in a Hermes 4, at night, over the Sahara Desert, between Kano and Tripoli.
