Istanbul Ataturk Final Hurrah 2018 – Part 2
Details
In this JetFlix TV exclusive, we present Henry Tenby’s immersive last ever domestic flight from Istanbul’s famous Ataturk Airport for a short flight to the Aegean tourist city of Izmir aboard a Turkish Airlines Airbus A330, in mid September of 2018.
This journey was just a month before the close of all passenger flights at Ataturk Airport, with the pending transfer of passenger flight operations to Istanbul’s new international airport on the distant far reaches of the city perimeter.
Henry had the good fortune to travel through the airport’s old Domestic terminal building, which was the airport’s nostalgic main airport terminal in the 1970s and 1980s, before the international gate area was constructed and opened in the 1990s.
The massive increase in passenger traffic over the past decade has rendered Ataturk Airport at maximum capacity to handle passenger flows, even though the international gate area is barely 20 years old. Situated close into the city of Istanbul, Ataturk Airport was a convenient 20-30 minute taxi ride to Zeytinburno or Taksim (depending on traffic), whereas the new airport is situated some 50 km from Istanbul city centre at Beyoglu so will not be nearly as convenient for passengers. So let this video serve as a living reminder of the good old days of Istanbul’s famous Ataturk airport.
