(SEE BELOW FOR VIDEO PREVIEW) We are very pleased to announce that two new VARIG Lockheed L-188 Electra video films have been released onto the JetFlix TV streaming platform for aviation fans.
Back in 1988, JetFlix TV founder Henry Tenby made a series of trips to visit VARIG and their Lockheed Electra operation whilst preparing an article on the Ponte Aerea operation for Airways Magazine. As part of the article, plans were set in place for Henry to photograph the VARIG Electra air-to-air, and it took three trips down to Brazil from the photo sortie to happen.
VARIG’s PR Manager Mr. Carlos Bueyes organized the logistics of the photo shoot as the Electra was coming off an overhaul at the airline’s Porto Alegre maintenance base. he arranged for the pilots and chase plane and as luck would have it, he brought a company VHS video camera along for the session and filmed the entire event.
The video tape (or a copy) was given to Henry Tenby after the shoot on September 15, 1988, and we are pleased to release this never seen before video to the viewers here on JetFlix TV.
The second video we are pleased to release was also filmed and prepared by VARIG in the early 1990s, just before the Lockheed Electra fleet was retired.
It features the VARIG Electra operation in its final months and is complete with staff and management interviews and memories, interlaced with amazing VARIG L-188 Lockheed Electra footage filmed at Rio’s Santos Dumont Airport and Sao Paulo’s Congonhas Airport.
Both of these videos have been sitting in a closet undisturbed for the past 25-30 years, so even though the tapes were never played during the passing decades, we did experience some image degradation.
That said, given the rarity of the material, we felt it was well worth presenting to our viewers purely for the historical nature of the footage. We are always looking for more VARIG Lockheed Electra footage to share with our viewers.
