This film highlights the introduction to service of the Convair 880 jetliner with Delta Air Lines with the first ship delivered on February 10, 1960.
The Convair 880 was the 4 engine passenger jet competitor to the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8, but it did not meet with the same level of success as the 707 and DC-8 with only 65 examples being built between 1959 and 1962.
Original factory customers for the Convair 880 included Cathay Pacific, Delta, Japan Air Lines, Northeast, Swissair, TWA and VIASA. The Convair 880 was actually the fastest of the early day jetliners.
The new fast jetliner went into service with Delta Air Lines in May 1960 and was retired in 1974 with Delta having operated 17 examples in their fleet. When retired from Delta, a large number of the type were acquired by American Jet Industries primarily for resale into the cargo market.
This film contains fantastic early 1960s footage of the Delta Convair 880 during its early days of service with the airline.
