(Quebecair 1978 Airline Promo Movie, This film is en Français – in French language)

Promo movies are exceedingly rare and this is the one and only such film that we have ever been fortunate enough to have sourced, from a former employee. A quick shot of a computer screen tells us this film dates from 1978, and the featured aircraft from Quebecair’s fleet from the era confirm’s the vintage of the film. Not to mention the plaid jackets and long-haired men.

In 1978 Quebecair’s fleet stood at a single Boeing 727-100, a Hercules, four Fairchild F27s, three BAC One Elevens, five Convair 580s and two Boeing 707-123Bs used for sun destination charter work. For some reason the Convairs do not appear in the film, which is a shame, but we do get to see plenty of BAC One Eleven, 727 and F27 action. Plus a snippet of 707 and Herc footage. Quebecair’s Convair 580s operated exclusively for James Bay Energy and did not generally work Quebecair’s scheduled services, so perhaps that explains their absence in the film. The icing on the cake would have been a generous helping of Quebecair 707 footage, which is sadly missing, but we have to be appreciative for the great footage this gem of a film does include.

This movie is a lovely airline industry snap-shot of the mid 1970s with some really cool airport views from Montreal and other smaller Quebec airports served by Quebecair. The airline was formed in 1946 as Rimouski Airlines and then merged with Gulf Aviation in 1953 to become Quebecair. By the mid 1970s, Quebecair’s scheduled passenger and cargo services linked Montreal and Quebec City with more than 45 terminals in Quebec and Labrador, while the charter and IT flights reached Hawaii, Mexico, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Europe and even North Africa. In 1987, Quebecair sadly absorbed into Canadian Airlines International (along with a number of other Canadian legacy local carriers).
