DC-8 Jet Holiday in Europe Early 1960s with CPA Canadian Pacific Airlines

Details

This early 1960s publicity film was made by Vancouver based CPA Canadian Pacific Airlines to promote their then new over-the-pole Douglas DC-8 jetliner service between Vancouver and Amsterdam. Amsterdam was the jumping off point for Canadians to visit many interesting destinations in early 1960s Europe. This all colour travel promo film is a joy to watch as will surely take any viewer back to the exciting era of the early 1960s.

Nice to see CP’s old DC-8-40s.
Got to fly on one of these in 1966, from Montreal to Rome, our starting-off point for a student travel seminar that took us to Turkey.

Magnificent memories Dieter. I love Turkey. To think you flew there via Rome on a CPA DC-8 from Canada is really amazing. You are so lucky to have these memories.

You are a very generous responder, Henry.
On this particular trip we only flew as far as Rome, then took the train, first to Venice, where we all swore that we would return for our honeymoons (I didn’t!), and then on to Istanbul on the Direct Orient Express. All very romantic.

PS: The aircraft was CF-CPF, a DC-8-43, named “Empress of Vancouver”,
apparently the first DC-8 delivered to CP.
Although a bit hard to see the name, it looks like the machine in your film is the same one.

Thank you for pointing this out Dieter.

Absolutely Dieter! I would love to do a rail trip like that one day. Getting harder to do with the advent of low cost airlines in Europe.

Nice Travel Log with some brief glimpses of a Rolls Royce powered CPA
DC-8-40. I wish there were more footage around of CPA’s DC-8’s.
